The Award Winners

Male Athlete of the Year: Scott Gilliland

Gilliland had a great year in intramurals; winning championships in Men's Flag Football, Soccer, and Softball and Co-Rec Basketball for the Bad Apples (Loyola FC in Soccer). He won the MVP in the Men's Flag Football Championship with a 3 TD performance and the League MVP for Men's Basketball, where the Bad Apples finished runner-up. He is the 2nd player to win the Male Athlete of the Year for the Bad Apples, following his teammate Michael Castaneda. Congratulations Scott!

Female Athlete of the Year: Jenny Higgins

Higgins won two championships in the two sports she competed in this year: one in Women's Volleyball with Team Box and one in Co-Rec Softball with Spungos.  She also won the MVP in the Co-Rec Softball Championship with a great pitching performance. She is the 1st Female Athlete of the Year to come from the law school since 2002. Congratulations Jenny!

Team of the Year: Bad Apples

The Bad Apples had probably one of the greatest years for any team in this intramural season.  They won four championships, the most by any single organization in Loyola intramural sports history. They won Men's Flag Football with an undefeated season, Softball as the lowest seed, Soccer, which ended Phi Psi's dynasty, and Co-Rec Basketball.  Also, the Bad Apples finished runner-up in Men's Basketball and has had the last two Male Athletes of the Year in Michael Castaneda and Scott Gilliland.

Sportsmanship Teams of the Year: Phi Psi (Men's) and BSU (Women's)

Phi Psi competed in all the intramural sports this year in the Men's division and combined with Theta Phi in Co-Rec. They won two championships in Co-Rec Volleyball as a 5th seed and Co-Rec Soccer with an undefeated season. Phi Psi's best finish in the Men's Division was runner-up in Soccer, ending their six year championship run.  Phi Psi had a finalist for Male Athlete of the Year with Josh Aranguiz.

BSU had some great performances in intramural sports this year in the Women's Division. Their best finish was runner up in Women's Basketball, losing in overtime to Theta Phi. They also had the league MVP in Women's Basketball and a finalist for Female Athlete of the Year in Atoyia Scott.

Congratulations Phi Psi and BSU!

Intramural Employees of the Year: Jess Megee and Angella "Angie D" Monroe

Megee and Monroe have been great help for the intramural sports program.  Megee was one of top official's for every sport and as a player winning 3 championships.  Monroe was one of our top scorekeepers and helped out whenever she was needed. Monroe and her partner Kirsten Thornton, last year's Intramural Employee of the Year, recorded all the stats for each league.  Without them we would not have been able to produce stats to put up onto the website. Congratulations Jess and Angie!

Intramural Official of the Year: Brandon Parham

Parham became the head official for the intramural sports department after a year hiatus. This year, he officiated every important game and officiated the Men's Flag Football, Volleyball, and Soccer Championships; the Women's Basketball Championship and Co-Rec's Flag Football and Soccer Championships. He was named All-State Official in flag football by the Louisiana Collegiate Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (LCIRSA). Thanks Brandon for a great year!

A Cinderella Story: Lowest Seed Wins Softball
Friday, May 01, 2009 2:26:51 PM

History was made this year in the Men's Intramural Softball League as the Bad Apples became the 1st team to win a championship as the lowest seed.  With a 12-5 victory over NOBAMA, the preseason #1 team, they rose to the occassion.  Bad Apples finished the regular season with a 1-4 record, however 3 of their 4 losses were in extra innings.  They were the lowest seed in the playoffs and had to play one extra game just to get into the semifinal round, which they won 15-4 over Phi Psi.  In the semifinal round, the Bad Apples defeated the top ranked and defending champions Law Dawgs, 9-5; the game started as a defensive battle but opened up in the last innings.

The Bad Apples started off the championship game with a 5-run 1st inning led by the 1st 3 batters: Jared Koscheski, John DeMatteo, and Kevin Ganssle. They were a combined 10 for 15 with 6 RBIs, 4 RBIs coming from Ganssle.  The biggest games came from the Co-MVPs of the championship. First, 1B Pat O'Toole went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs, but his biggest play was a triple with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning that increased their lead to 8-2, and they never looked back.  The other MVP and veteran Michael Castaneda pitched outstanding.  With his unorthodox pitching, he held the high octane bats of NOBAMA to 5 runs with scoreless innings from the 2nd to the 4th inning. This championship run was a team effort from every position on offense and defense, including Ryan Murphy, Rory Coakley, and Rob Sproul.

NOBAMA was led by Matt Barkett, who went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs.  Todd Everage and Charles Faquin both went 3 for 4 with a RBI.  However, they could not bring in any runs when they had the opportunity.

This was a true cinderella story for the Bad Apples in softball as many analysts did not give them a chance to win the championship. The Bad Apples Organization finished the 2008-09 intramural season with 4 championships in Men's Flag Football, Soccer, Softball, and Co-rec Basketball, as well as a runner-up in Men's Basketball. They will probably be considered one of the greatest intramural teams in Loyola University history.

Loyola FC ends Phi Psi's Soccer Dynasty
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 7:15:51 PM

Loyola FC played their best game of the year and dethroned Phi Psi for their 1st Men's Intramural Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory. This matchup was a rematch of last year's soccer championship as Phi Psi won 2-1.  Phi Psi has had a six year soccer championship dynasty, but last night they had trouble putting the ball into the net.  Loyola FC's Sebastian "Seabass" Guillen scored the 1st goal in the 7th minute with a great shot to the bottom left corner of the net, passing Phi Psi goalie Jay O'Conor.  Both teams had some great chances to score, but failed to do so throughout the game.

The biggest story was Loyola FC defensive line, led by Jason Boice, Scott Gilliland, and Pat Haile shutting down the Phi Psi offensive power of Josh Aranguiz and Noel Ledesma, who was shut out for the first time all season. Gilliland did not play in the two teams regular season matchups, in which Phi Psi had won 1-0.  Jess Megee had 5 saves for Loyola FC to record the shut out in the championship.  Loyola FC put the game out of reach in the 36th minute with "Seabass" Guillen's 2nd goal from a great pass by Diego Morales. Guillen was named the MVP of the championship

Loyola FC ended their soccer season with the Loyola International Business Organization (LIBO) Championship and the Men's Intramural Soccer Championship.  Jason Boice after the game said that the Loyola FC did it like BOOM!!!

Note: Scott Gilliland (Bad Apples/Loyola FC) won the Men's Intramural Athlete of the Year

Phi Psi/Theta Phi win Co-rec Soccer
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 6:50:28 PM

Phi Psi/Theta Phi dominated the regular season and finished it with a Co-rec Soccer Championship with a 5-1 win over ADG/Gamma Phi.  Phi Psi/Theta Phi were led by the leading scorer of the league, Josh Aranguiz, as he scored 4 goals and was named MVP of the championship. It was a close match through the 1st half as Phi Psi/Theta Phi had a 1-0 lead.  Jason Boice from ADG/Gamma Phi scored a goal to bring the score to 2-1 in the 2nd half, however Aranguiz scored 2 quick goals to put the game out of reach for ADG/Gamma Phi.

Birdman's Dealers win Men's Championship
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 2:22:31 PM

Birdman's Dealers upset the Bad Apples 47-40 in overtime in the Men's Intramural Basketball Championship.  Birdman's Dealers (7-1) got their revenge on the Bad Apples, who gave them their only loss in the season. Matt Shearman, who was named MVP, led the way for the Birdman's Dealers with 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.  Shearman did a great job driving to the basket and making his free throws when it counted the most.  Jonathan Detrinis contributed inside as he finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. The Birdman's Dealers played a tough matchup using a 3-2 zone, causing the Bad Apples to have a poor shooting night from the perimeter.

Bad Apples (6-2) had their chances to win the game in regulation.  Down two points, Bad Apple's Scott Gilliland drove to the paint, made a tough layup, and got fouled with about 3 seconds left in the 2nd half.  However, he missed the ensuing free throw and there was a fight for the loose ball.  A jump ball was awarded to the Bad Apples with 0.7 seconds left. Ernesto Berkowitz inbounded the ball to Gilliland and his fadeaway shot hit the front of the rim.  The Bad Apples had poor offensive possessions in overtime.  This gave Birdman's Dealers the chance to take the lead and they never looked back. Scott Gilliland finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Michael Castaneda, who is 0-4 in championship games, led the Bad Apples in scoring with 15 points.  Ernesto Berkowitz had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Birdman's Dealers, being the 5th seed, is the lowest seeded team to win the championship in 7 years.  This is the first championship won by a law school team since 2005, when Stop-n-Pop held the title.

Theta Phi wins 4th straight championship
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 1:49:15 PM

The top seeded Theta Phi Alpha took over in overtime to win their 4th straight Women's Intramural Basketball Championship.  In a rematch of last year's championship, Theta Phi pulled it off again with a 47-38 win over the BSU Coldhearted Killaz. Theta Phi (5-0), led by their two all-star guards Katherine Conley and Michelle Gingras, outscored BSU 9-0 in overtime.  Conley was named the MVP of the championship, with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.  Gingras had another great night, distributing the ball to her teammates and scoring when needed; as she finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

BSU Coldhearted Killaz (3-2) continued to fight throughout the game, as it was a close battle in the 2nd half.  The leading scorer of the league, Atoyia Scott, made a game tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime.  Sharyn Booker had a great shooting night from the perimeter, however BSU could not find their offense in overtime, and had key turnovers to give Theta Phi opportunities to run away with the game. Scott finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists and Booker had 16 points.

Theta Phi Alpha continued to make history in women's intramural basketball as the seniors, including Katherine Conley, will leave with 4 championships and only one loss in their storied careers.
